Why Wear a Longline Bra?

If you want to add a little glamour to your intimate apparel collection, you can do it by adding a longline bra. The longline bra flatters as it extends to the waist or sometimes down to the hips for a sleek, pretty look. The longline can best be described as an ultra-feminine basic undergarment that can provide the smooth lines that give you a more smooth and polished look.

Back in the 1940s and 1950s when the cone shaped look was in, and when other ultra-supportive and ultra-constricting bra styles were in fashion, the longline bra also came on the scene. Initially, the original longline bra styles were designed to wear under bridal gowns and were generally strapless like the most popular gowns. Times have changed but apparently not that much as strapless bridal gowns are just as popular today!

In the 1940s Women were all about showing off their curves, lifting their breasts and minimizing their waists. Most longline style bras of the time were very good at accomplishing this. However, comfort was not a consideration at the time! The longline style helped women of the 1940s define their shapes as well as lift and support their breasts in order to achieve a particular look. The women of the 1940s also wanted to improve their postures. They would often pair the longline bra with a girdle to provide a smoothing effect (credit: “1940s Lingerie”).

The longline bra continued on as a popular style through the 1950s and into the 1960s even though the hippie era had started and decidedly went against all structure as the trend of going braless took hold. The style grew less popular with time until the 1980s with a resurgence of a more structured look that required defining styles. Pop culture via Madonna and Cyndi Lauper was credited with bringing the longline style back.

Pros and Cons of the Longline Bra Style

The longline style provides an extra-long and an extra-wide band below the bust which generally adds support. Some longline styles offer some (or a lot) of shaping for the midsection. The fit can be very flattering to a variety of body types. It can be worn as a supportive crop top in some cases. Overall, it provides more coverage than a regular bra.

You should be careful when purchasing a longline bra, however. If you don’t get the right size, you could end up with fabric that rolls up. This obviously happens if you purchase a size that’s too small. Sometimes it can also happen with particular fabric types. Petite sized women, or women with a short torso may find that the longline style doesn’t fit in the right way and can not only be uncomfortable, it can also just be too long.
